The Fall of the House of Usher is an American gothic horror drama television miniseries created by Mike Flanagan. All eight episodes were released on Netflix on October 12, 2023, each directed by either Flanagan or Michael Fimognari, with the latter also acting as cinematographer for the entire series. Auguste Dupin, an Assistant United States Attorney who dedicated his career to exposing Fortunato's corruption, to his childhood home, where he tells the true story of his family and unveils the Ushers' darkest secrets. As she starts to get closer she gets to the truth, however, ominious things start happening to her and her family. Mike Flanagan’s gothic horror miniseries for Netflix is loosely based on the works of Edgar Allan Poe, reimagining them to recount the deaths of the six scions of the fictional Usher family, the powerful and corrupt owners of a modern pharmaceutical company.
“She sort of looks like me after I put on four stone during lockdown but I’m not actually unattractive,” the anonymous woman told Daily Mail, referring to the actress’ appearance in the show. On Facebook, Harvey reiterated that she is “not Martha,” and claimed she is being “attacked” online by viewers of the show who believe she inspired the character. Gadd has claimed he “disguised” the person who inspired Martha’s character so well that he doesn’t think she would “recognize” herself — but amateur internet sleuths have attempted to deduce her identity despite his pleas to stop. “Baby Reindeer” has become an instant phenomenon on Netflix, rocketing to No. 1 on the streaming service in 30 countries, including the US.

To secure their fortune — and future — two ruthless siblings build a family dynasty that begins to crumble when their heirs mysteriously die, one by one. Loosely based on various works by 19th-century author Edgar Allan Poe (most prominently the eponymous 1840 short story), the series adapts otherwise unrelated stories and characters by Poe into a single nonlinear narrative set from 1953 to 2023. It recounts both the rise to power of Roderick Usher, the powerful CEO of a corrupt pharmaceutical company and his sister Madeline Usher, the firm's genius COO, and the events leading to the deaths of all six of Roderick’s children. It stars an ensemble cast led by Carla Gugino as a mysterious woman plaguing the Ushers, Bruce Greenwood as an elderly Roderick and Mary McDonnell as an elderly Madeline. This time, Flanagan’s ghoulish crew is entering familial territory, as ruthless siblings Roderick and Madeline Usher have built Fortunato Pharmaceuticals into an empire of wealth, privilege, and power.
Problematically, Flanagan tends to conflate queerness with depravity and sexual fluidity is punished here with an unnerving flourish. But the show remembers to be actually scary, with truly inspired uses of chimps, mirrors and sprinkler systems. There’s no question that The Fall of the House of Usher ranks among Flanagan’s finest works. The eldest of the Usher “bastards,” Victorine has made helping people her life’s work, but like her siblings, the true source of her ambition is her desire for her father’s approval and affection.
The drama — created by Zoe Robyn (Hawaii Five-0, The Equalizer), who’ll serve as co-showrunner alongside fellow EP Cuse — follows the staff of Miami’s busiest Level 1 Trauma Center as they navigate medical emergencies. Willa Fitzgerald (The Fall of the House of Usher) stars as ER doc Dani Simms, who is unexpectedly promoted to Chief Resident amidst the fallout of her own provocative romantic relationship. The first two episodes of The Fall of the House of Usher premiered at Fantastic Fest in September 2023 before the Netflix release the following month, being viewed more than 13 million times in its first two weeks. It was met with positive reviews, with critics praising its production values, directing, and performances (in particular from Gugino, Greenwood and Mark Hamill), although they were divided on its narrative, notably in relation to the source materials.
Elsewhere, horror anthology show Them returns for a second season on Prime Video, while Knuckles the echidna takes center stage in Paramount Plus' new Sonic the Hedgehog spin-off. In December 2021, Mike Flanagan announced on Twitter that principal photography began on The Fall of the House of Usher in January 2022. What’s On Netflix reported that, according to Production Weekly, this Netflix limited series was scheduled to begin filming on January 24th, 2022 and end on May 25th, 2022. With the initial announcement about The Fall of the House of Usher, the Intrepid Pictures team revealed that the limited series only has eight episodes. The series is one episode longer than one of Flanagan’s most recent series, Midnight Mass, and an episode or two shorter than his previous shows, The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, and The Midnight Club. This should be plenty for The Fall of the House of Usher to leave an impression on viewers.
Daily Mail, however, pointed to other parallels between Martha and the unnamed woman, specifically her alleged history of harassment. The show lands on the streaming platform on Thursday 12 October - but the early reviews are in - and it's safe to say it’s a hit. Netflix’s new horror series has earned itself an impressive 95 percent on Rotten Tomatoes ahead of its release later this week.
